Got a Loose Bumper? What To Do Next

The purpose of a vehicle’s bumper is to absorb and distribute the shock when you collide with something. Unfortunately, it won't be as efficient after sustaining damage. Here are some helpful tips for what to do next if you’ve got a loose bumper on your vehicle.

Perform a Thorough Examination

If you notice your vehicle’s bumper is loose, inspect it for the cause. Typically, a loose bumper comes from misaligned or broken bumper brackets, which securely fasten the bumper to the rest of the car. You may notice if these parts need fixing or replacing and can solve the problem yourself.

Push It Into Place

After checking the brackets and determining they are not the problem, try pushing the bumper back into place. It should click together and hold firm if the brackets are in good shape. If it’s still loose and wobbly, the problem may be with the retainers rather than the brackets.

Make Necessary Repairs

If you were able to fasten your bumper back onto the brackets securely, you should also repair any damage you noticed during your inspection. You can buy a repair kit from your local auto parts or hardware store to try and fix small cracks or dents on the bumper.

Take Your Vehicle to a Body Shop

If you’ve tried replacing the brackets and your bumper still hangs loose, the next best step is to take your car to a certified body shop. Mechanics can handle exterior repairs and ensure everything on your vehicle is secure. Many body shops offer warranty options in case your bumper loosens again. If you’re unsure about performing repairs yourself, leave them to a specialist.
