According to the American Automobile Association, the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day is considered to be the most dangerous time of the year for drivers. In fact, experts refer to this period as the 100 Deadliest Days.

But why is this time of year considered to be so deadly? What makes summer roads more dangerous than winter roads?

Here are four things you may experience on the road during these last few weeks of summer that make driving more hazardous than you think.

  1. Increased construction. Summer is the season of road work because the daily and nightly temperatures don't fluctuate as much. This makes the weather great for making road repairs, building bridges, and paving streets. Unfortunately, construction also increases traffic. And drivers are more likely to make reckless decisions when they need to get somewhere.

  2. Increased traffic. It's not just road construction that increases traffic on the roads during the summer. More families are on vacation, more teenagers and college students are out of school and on the road, and more folks are headed somewhere to enjoy the warm weather and summer sun. But the more cars there are on the road, the more likely you are to get into a collision.

  3. More inexperienced drivers. As mentioned above, college students and teenagers are out of school for the summer. This means less experienced drivers are out on the road throughout the day, not just between 3 PM and 8 PM. That said, be sure to check your blind spots and that you keep a safe distance behind the car in front of you.

  4. More motorcyclists. Speaking of checking your blindspots, summer is also a dangerous time for motorcyclists. You might see motorcyclists during the spring and fall, but summer is when they're out the most. Double-check your blind spots, keep a safe distance behind motorcycles, and give motorcyclists the entire lane.
